Israeli security forces thwarted an espionage attempt involving a young Jerusalem resident, 23-year-old Ardler Amouyal, who was arrested last month for allegedly working for Iranian intelligence. According to the Shin Bet security agency and Israel Police, Amouyal was in contact with Iranian operatives via social media, carrying out various sabotage missions in exchange for payment.
Amouyal, who communicated with an Iranian handler named “John,” conducted intelligence-gathering tasks, including photographing addresses, spraying graffiti, and filming locations of interest in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and Netanya. He even suggested more serious acts, like burning a police van or disrupting the light rail in Jerusalem. Amouyal also researched how to make explosives and attempted to recruit others for further missions.
In return, Amouyal received payments through cryptocurrency. Authorities revealed that he was aware his handler was Iranian but still proceeded with the missions. The investigation highlights ongoing efforts by Iranian intelligence to recruit Israeli citizens for espionage and terror activities.
Amouyal’s remand has been extended, and an indictment is expected soon. This case underscores the growing threat of foreign espionage within Israel.
