Canadian PM Mark Carney announced Canada will recognize a Palestinian state at the UN in September, citing humanitarian concerns in Gaza and stalled peace talks. He said the move hinges on reforms by the Palestinian Authority, including elections and demilitarization.

Israel condemned the decision, calling it a reward for Hamas. U.S. President Trump responded by threatening trade penalties if the move proceeds, saying it undermines peace efforts and distracts from addressing Gaza’s hunger crisis.

Canada joins France and the UK, both of which have also pledged recognition. Germany and Italy remain opposed.
