A Palestinian gunman infiltrated an Israeli army checkpoint in the northern West Bank early Tuesday, killing two soldiers and wounding eight others before being shot dead, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
The attack occurred at the Taysir checkpoint, where the assailant, armed with an M-16 rifle and tactical gear, approached a military post undetected before opening fire on troops at dawn. The fallen soldiers were identified as Sgt. Maj. (res.) Ofer Yung, 39, and Sgt. Maj. (res.) Avraham Tzvi Tzvika Friedman, 43.
An exchange of fire ensued, with the attacker briefly breaching the army post before being killed by a grenade thrown by backup forces. Eight soldiers were wounded, including two in serious condition.
Following the attack, Palestinian media reported an Israeli drone strike in a nearby town, though the IDF has not confirmed it. The incident comes amid ongoing Israeli counter-terrorism operations in the northern West Bank.
