Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz publicly defended IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir on Wednesday after attacks from the Prime Minister’s son, Yair Netanyahu, who accused Zamir of undermining government plans to fully occupy Gaza.
Zamir reportedly warned that such a move would endanger hostages, strain military resources, and create a dangerous long-term trap. Katz affirmed Zamir’s right to voice concerns, saying, “The IDF will carry out the government’s decisions with professionalism—but commanders must speak their minds.”
Yair Netanyahu’s online accusation of a “military coup” drew outrage, including from Zamir, who confronted the Prime Minister directly in a heated meeting. The IDF currently controls 75% of Gaza, but Netanyahu’s cabinet is weighing a full takeover amid stalled negotiations with Hamas.
The occupation plan remains controversial, with relatives of hostages fearing for their safety and military leaders questioning its viability. No formal decision has been announced, but political and public pressure is mounting as the war nears its 22nd month.
