Mount of Olives in Jerusalem
The Mount of Olives, also known as Mount Olivet, is a mountain crest east of and near to Jerusalem’s Old City that was named after the olive orchards that originally surrounded it. The mountain itself has many biblical connotations, being the site of the binding of Isaac, Jesus’ procession to his crucifixion, and the arrival by foot of Mary Magdalene and other women following his crucifixion.
In the Christian tradition, the Mount of Olives has both been closely associated with Jesus of Nazareth and with his mother, Mary. For this reason, it has been and continues to be a place of Christian pilgrimage for centuries, particularly among Catholics, Protestants, and Eastern Orthodox.
It has been used as a Jewish burial ground for over 3,000 years, and currently holds about 150,000 graves. The mount is situated in the tradition of Jewish cemeteries. Ever since Biblical times, Jews have had their final resting place on the Mount of Olives. The location is rich in Jewish history and tradition, and it is home to numerous historic structures and burial places. The necropolis on the southern slope of modern-day Silwan was the burial location of Jerusalem’s most notable residents during the reign of the Biblical monarchs.
During the Second Temple period, the religious ceremony commemorating the beginning of the new month was conducted atop the Mount of Olives. The Mount of Olives is Eighty meters taller than the Temple Mount and provides a 360-degree view of the Temple site. The Jews would make pilgrimages to this location because they believed that it would be easier to see God’s glory.
Religious visitors of all types come to the Mount of Olivet from around the world, and enjoy a breathtaking view from the summit. Though it can be difficult to walk to the top, it is worth the time it takes for the vantage point. The panoramic view showcases Jerusalem’s historic city including the Temple Mount and in the distance, you can see the Judean Desert.
