Australian police say bombs and Islamic State flags were discovered inside a vehicle used by the father-and-son terrorists who carried out a deadly attack at a Hanukkah event in Sydney’s Bondi Beach.
Authorities confirmed the car contained two homemade ISIS flags and multiple improvised explosive devices. The vehicle was registered to Naveed Akram, 24, one of the attackers who carried out the massacre alongside his father, Sajid Akram, 50.
Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett described the attack as terrorism inspired by Islamic State ideology. Fifteen people were killed in the shooting, which targeted a Jewish festival near the beach.
New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon said the vehicle was located near the attack site and remains central to the investigation.
Police also revealed that the two suspects traveled to the Philippines last month. The purpose of the trip is still under investigation, and authorities have not yet said whether it is directly linked to the attack.
Security agencies across Australia remain on high alert as investigators work to determine whether the attackers acted alone or had assistance.
