The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have called up additional troops for defensive missions in the Golan Heights following escalating tensions in southern Syria. Rebels have overrun significant areas of Syrian regime-held territory, including regions near the Golan border, raising concerns about potential spillover into Israel.
The conflict’s roots trace back to the start of the Syrian Civil War in 2011, which began in the southern city of Dara’a. Rebel forces eventually controlled parts of the border with Israel, leading to clashes with the Syrian regime. The situation became more complicated in 2015 when rebel groups, some of which threatened Syria’s Druze population, fought near the Israeli border. Israel had previously provided humanitarian aid to wounded Syrians, leading to local controversy when residents of Majdal Shams attacked an ambulance transporting Syrians, fearing the men were involved in anti-Druze fighting.
The current instability in southern Syria, with ongoing battles between various rebel factions and the regime, could further strain Israel’s security along its northern border. The IDF’s increased presence reflects growing concerns about the potential for violence spilling over from Syria into Israeli territory.
