Israel carried out strikes in Lebanon after the military said Hezbollah launched drones at its forces overnight, a fresh flare-up that underscores the fragility of the American-mediated effort to wind down hostilities along the northern border.

The Israel Defense Forces said Hezbollah drones targeted Israeli troops, prompting retaliatory strikes. Smoke was seen rising from areas of southern Lebanon, including the plain of Marjayoun, where Israeli shelling struck earlier in the week. The exchange is the latest in a pattern of near-daily Israeli operations against Hezbollah targets, which the military describes as efforts to dismantle the group’s infrastructure, including tunnels and weapons storage sites.

The renewed fighting comes even as diplomacy continues. Israel and Lebanon have been engaged in American-brokered talks aimed at disarming Hezbollah and gradually withdrawing Israeli forces from southern Lebanon. Under a framework agreed earlier, the Lebanese army has begun moving into designated pilot zones as Israeli troops step back, and Israeli forces recently withdrew from at least one village, where the Lebanese prime minister planted a national flag in a symbolic milestone.

Yet significant obstacles persist. Israel continues to hold a buffer zone reaching into Lebanese territory, which officials say is necessary to protect northern communities, and Hezbollah has rejected the disarmament framework and refused to lay down its weapons. The continued exchanges of fire highlight how far the two sides remain from a durable arrangement, even as the diplomatic track inches forward.

The Lebanon front is one of several the Israeli military is managing simultaneously. Israel is engaged in continued operations in Gaza, has struck targets in Syria, and remains on high alert regarding Iran, even as it has stayed out of the latest direct exchanges between Washington and Tehran. Defense Minister Israel Katz visited troops in southern Syria this week, part of the broad regional footprint Israel has maintained through nearly three years of war.

For communities on both sides of the Israel-Lebanon border, who have endured displacement and destruction, the persistence of strikes amid ongoing negotiations captures the uneasy reality of the moment. Talks proceed in diplomatic channels while explosions continue to echo across the frontier. Whether the framework can ultimately hold, and whether Hezbollah will disarm, remains one of the central unresolved questions of the war.
