Israeli Schools to Stay Closed Tuesday, Aim to Reopen Wednesday

Israeli schools will remain closed Tuesday following the overnight missile exchanges with Iran, Education Minister Yoav Kisch announced, with the goal of resuming in-person instruction Wednesday in a protected framework.

Kisch acknowledged the tension in keeping schools shut while workplaces remain open, writing on X that it is unreasonable to keep the education system closed so long as safe shelter access can be guaranteed. The extra day is intended to give schools time to organize.

Notably, about 40% of schools nationwide lack adequate shelter access, according to a State Comptroller audit from March — a figure that complicates any quick return to normal.

Special education schools and programs for at-risk youth will be prioritized in the reopening. All matriculation exams scheduled for this week have been canceled.
