Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has condemned the arson attack on the Or Habib synagogue in Jerusalem’s Sanhedria neighborhood, calling it an act of “desecration” and a reminder of “tragic periods in our history.”
Authorities confirmed that the fire, which damaged the synagogue founded by former Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef, was set intentionally, according to the Fire and Rescue Service.
“We must not allow such scenes to repeat themselves,” Netanyahu said. He urged law enforcement to locate the perpetrators quickly and ensure they face the full extent of the law.
The attack drew strong bipartisan condemnation. Opposition Leader Yair Lapid demanded that the culprits be found and “brought to the strictest justice,” while Yisrael Beytenu chairman Avigdor Liberman warned that “a handful of criminals must not be allowed to undermine the unity of Israeli society.”
The investigation is ongoing.
