Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu departed for Washington on Sunday, where he will meet with U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss key regional issues, including the fight against Hamas, the release of Israeli hostages, and countering Iran.
Before boarding his flight, Netanyahu emphasized the significance of the meeting, calling it a testament to the strong U.S.-Israel alliance. He expressed confidence that close cooperation with Trump could reshape the Middle East, building on Israel’s military actions and regional diplomacy.
A major focus of the discussions is expected to be Saudi-Israeli normalization. The Trump administration has been pushing to expand the Abraham Accords, which previously led to Israel establishing ties with the UAE, Bahrain, and Morocco. However, negotiations with Riyadh have stalled due to the Gaza war and Saudi demands for a Palestinian state.
Netanyahu’s visit also comes amid internal political pressure. Far-right members of his coalition demand a full military victory over Hamas and have threatened to withdraw from the government if Israel continues with the current ceasefire and hostage negotiations.
Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer and hostage coordinator Gal Hirsch are accompanying Netanyahu, alongside a senior cardiologist, raising speculation about the prime minister’s health.
The talks with Trump could shape Israel’s next steps in Gaza, its regional alliances, and future U.S.-Israel cooperation.
