Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Thursday that his military secretary, Major General Roman Gofman, will become the next director of Israel’s Mossad.
Gofman, 49, is a decorated career officer who rose through the ranks of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), serving in Armored Corps units, commanding several brigades and divisions, and heading the National Ground Training Center. He was seriously wounded defending southern Israel on October 7, 2023, when he rushed from his home to engage Hamas militants.
Netanyahu described him as “the most worthy and suitable candidate,” praising his “initiative, deep understanding of the enemy, absolute discretion, and proven combat leadership.” The current Mossad chief, David Barnea, whose five-year term ends in June 2026, congratulated Gofman and offered to help with the handover process.
The appointment — submitted to the Advisory Committee for Senior Appointments for final approval — signals a major leadership change at Israel’s top foreign intelligence agency.
