President Isaac Herzog offered heartfelt condolences to Christians in Israel and around the world following the passing of Pope Francis, referring to him as “a man of deep faith and boundless compassion.”

In his statement, Herzog praised the Pope’s lifelong commitment to the poor and his efforts to promote peace. He also highlighted the pontiff’s dedication to strengthening ties with the Jewish community and advancing interfaith dialogue as a means to foster understanding and respect.

Despite recent tensions among Jewish leaders over some of the Pope’s remarks on Israel and his use of certain New Testament references, Herzog emphasized the importance of the late Pope’s mission.

“I truly hope that his prayers for peace in the Middle East and for the safe return of the hostages will soon be answered,” Herzog said. “May his memory continue to inspire acts of kindness, unity, and hope.”
