Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich announced plans to approve over 3,000 housing units in the disputed E1 zone between Jerusalem and Ma’ale Adumim, calling the move a decisive step against a Palestinian state.
The E1 project has been frozen for decades due to international opposition, as critics say it would split the West Bank and hinder a contiguous Palestinian state. Smotrich described the decision as “Zionism at its best,” while Peace Now noted the units represent a 33% increase in Ma’ale Adumim’s housing stock.
Supporters, including Ma’ale Adumim’s mayor, say the expansion will counter Palestinian “illegal construction.” Opponents warn it could inflame tensions and further isolate East Jerusalem from surrounding Palestinian cities.
