Storm Byron reached Israel after sweeping through Greece and Cyprus, bringing powerful winds, severe rainfall, and widespread flood risks across the country.
Authorities were also searching for a yacht carrying five people — four Israelis — that departed Ashdod for Cyprus and lost contact Tuesday night.
Rain and winds were expected to intensify through Wednesday night and Thursday. Sgt. Yossi Deklo of Fire and Rescue warned of gusts up to 90 km/h and rainfall “the likes of which we have not seen.”
The Israel Meteorological Service issued orange alerts warning against swimming, as well as for heavy rain, lightning, and urban flooding. Drainage systems across coastal cities were already struggling. Tel Aviv recorded 67 millimeters of rain by mid-morning; areas south of Haifa saw nearly 100 millimeters.
The IDF Home Front Command raised readiness levels, and soldiers at remote southern bases were released early for the weekend to avoid potentially dangerous travel.
Local authorities urged residents to avoid flooded areas, stay indoors when possible, and check rooftops and drainage grates. The Health Ministry advised families to monitor elderly relatives and watch for hypothermia.
Storm Byron is expected to continue affecting much of the country into the weekend.
