The current building was constructed in 1894 by a high-ranking Turkish Pasha Rabbah Daoud Amin Effendi al-Husseini, who settled there along with his four wives. The structure was then sold to a messianic Christian group led by Horation Spafford and his spouse, Ana, after he passed in 1895.
Two waves of Swedish immigrants arrived at the American Colony in 1896. The Christian utopian community that they founded became known as the American Colony.
Soon after, the building was turned into a hotel when the Plato von Ustiniv, a Jaffa hotelier requested the Spaffords family to accommodate some of the guests who are visiting Jerusalem.
