Former President Donald Trump said Tuesday that it’s “up to Israel” to decide whether to occupy the entire Gaza Strip, following Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s support for a full military takeover—even at the risk of harming remaining hostages.
Trump’s focus, he said, is humanitarian aid. He pledged U.S. support for food distribution in Gaza, noting Israeli and Arab cooperation. The U.S. has already funneled millions to the controversial Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), but Trump now plans to launch new U.S.-led food centers in the enclave.
Israeli officials hope increased pressure on Hamas through military action will force a hostage release. However, internal disagreement is growing. The IDF opposes a full occupation, fearing for the safety of the 50 remaining hostages and questioning the lack of an exit strategy.
Humanitarian organizations are also alarmed. Chaos at GHF aid sites and shootings—blamed variously on the IDF and Hamas—have left hundreds dead. Aid remains insufficient, and the Strip faces a looming famine.
