President Donald Trump said Friday that he is losing faith in the prospect of a deal with Iran, even as he credited Tehran for its resilience, in remarks that captured the uncertain state of a war now stretching into its sixth month.

Speaking at a cabinet meeting at Camp David, Trump was asked about the status of talks with Iran. He claimed Tehran is always interested in talking but constantly breaks its word, and pointed to an Iranian missile attack on American troops in Jordan that he said came while the two sides were in the middle of negotiations. Asked whether a deal remains possible, he responded that he is losing faith in them. Yet he also offered a measure of grudging respect, saying most people would have given up by now and that the Iranians are tough.

Asked how many more strikes it would take to restore maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, Trump answered simply that you never know. American forces have continued their air campaign against Iranian targets, and the conflict has kept widening. This week a drone struck an American owned gas tanker at Egypt’s port of Damietta, the first time the war reached Egyptian soil, with Iranian sources implying Tehran’s involvement.

The regional dimensions continue to multiply. Assessments by Saudi Arabia and its partners indicate that Iran aligned Houthis attacked the kingdom this week from Iraqi territory in coordination with Iraqi armed groups. Iran’s foreign minister has been lobbying European governments to deny the United States the use of bases on their soil, and the Pentagon has reportedly discussed scaling back its military presence in Kuwait following Iranian attacks.

For Israel, which has stayed out of the latest direct exchanges while remaining on high alert, Trump’s wavering confidence in diplomacy carries significant implications. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pressed for continued military pressure on Iran, and a collapse of talks could open the door to the renewed escalation he has advocated. At the same time, Israeli security officials remain focused on reports that Iran has intensified efforts to target senior Israeli figures.

As the war grinds on with no clear end, Trump’s own assessment, tough adversary, faltering diplomacy, unpredictable path ahead, may be the most honest summary available.
