Former U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly considering a dramatic escalation in the standoff with Iran if the country continues restricting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil routes.

According to a report by Axios citing U.S. officials, Trump is weighing the possibility of seizing Iran’s Kharg Island oil terminal, a key hub that handles a large portion of Iran’s crude exports.

The move would likely require U.S. troops on the ground, marking a significant expansion of American involvement in the ongoing confrontation with Tehran.

The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow but strategically vital waterway through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes. Any disruption to traffic there can have immediate global economic consequences.

Officials say the potential plan is being considered as part of broader efforts to ensure that oil tankers can safely navigate the region.

At the same time, Trump is reportedly working to build an international coalition aimed at securing the reopening of the shipping lane. The coalition could be announced as early as this week.

The proposal highlights growing tensions in the region as military operations against Iran continue and the risk of wider conflict remains high.
