Two National Guard members from West Virginia were critically injured in a shooting just blocks from the White House. Authorities say the attack was “targeted.” The suspect, believed to be Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national who entered the U.S. in 2021, was shot and taken into custody with non-life-threatening injuries.

President Donald Trump condemned the attack, calling for a reinvestigation of all Afghan refugees admitted under the previous administration. Israeli President Isaac Herzog and Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar expressed solidarity with the U.S.

Investigators are still searching for a motive. Video reportedly shows the suspect approaching the troops and opening fire immediately. The incident occurred amid national debates over the National Guard’s deployment in Washington, D.C. Some troops had just extended their service through year’s end.
