United Torah Judaism (UTJ) quit Prime Minister Netanyahu’s coalition Monday over a controversial bill that would require yeshiva students to report for IDF processing. Citing broken promises and unsatisfactory legislation, UTJ’s Degel Hatorah and Agudat Yisrael factions submitted resignations from all government roles.
Jerusalem Affairs Minister Meir Porush and other key Haredi leaders said the government had repeatedly failed to protect yeshiva students’ exemption status. If Shas follows UTJ’s lead, Netanyahu’s coalition could lose its majority — though both parties say they don’t yet intend to collapse the government.
