The Biden administration announced on Tuesday that it would not withhold weapon shipments to Israel, despite a 30-day deadline expiring for Israel to meet US demands to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. While Israel took some actions, including reopening aid crossings and resuming aid delivery to northern Gaza, it fell short of the US benchmarks, particularly in the number of aid trucks entering Gaza. A report by aid organizations confirmed that Israel had failed to meet most of the US requirements, including allowing 350 aid trucks daily and fully opening new crossing points.
The US State Department emphasized that while the situation remains dire, Israel’s partial compliance, along with US intervention, had made some improvements. However, aid levels remained well below expectations, with only 57 trucks entering Gaza daily on average in October. Additionally, Israel passed legislation restricting the operations of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA).
The Biden administration has continued to send military aid to Israel while pressing for more substantial humanitarian access, with the UN calling for consistent aid deliveries to alleviate suffering in Gaza.
