Israel’s Knesset voted 62–47 Monday to mandate the death penalty for West Bank Palestinians convicted of deadly terrorist acts in military courts. The law, championed by far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, calls for death by hanging within 90 days of sentencing, with judges permitted to choose life imprisonment only under vaguely defined “special circumstances.” No right of appeal is provided.

The legislation notably excludes Israeli citizens, who are tried in civilian courts. Critics — including the Attorney General’s office, Shin Bet, and Foreign Ministry — warned it may violate international law and the Geneva Conventions. Several opposition parties and human rights groups announced plans to petition the High Court. European foreign ministers urged Israel to abandon the measure, while the U.S. said it respects Israel’s sovereign right to set its own penalties.
