Ahead of Purim, Israeli lawmakers received a symbolic package—one piece of pita bread and a quote from freed hostage Eli Sharabi—to draw attention to the suffering of those still held captive in Gaza.

Purim is traditionally marked by exchanging baskets of food, but this year, families of the hostages used the occasion to spotlight the dire conditions their loved ones endure. The parcels, tied with yellow ribbons, included a photo of Sharabi and his powerful statement: “People should really think when they open a fridge at home, it’s everything.”

Sharabi, whose wife and daughters were murdered in the October 7 Hamas attack on Kibbutz Be’eri, was released last month under a ceasefire deal. He emerged severely malnourished, having lost 66 pounds during his captivity. Since his release, he has become an outspoken advocate for securing the freedom of those still held in Gaza, sharing his traumatic experience in a recent interview.

The initiative aims to keep public and political focus on the hostages as their families continue pressing for action.
