President Donald Trump declared Monday that the U.S. will hold Iran directly responsible for any future attacks by Yemen’s Houthi rebels, who claim to have targeted a U.S. aircraft carrier and foreign ships in the Red Sea.
“Every shot fired by the Houthis will be looked upon as a shot fired by IRAN, and IRAN will suffer the consequences,” Trump posted on Truth Social, signaling a harsher stance on Tehran amid ongoing nuclear talks.
His statement followed U.S. airstrikes in Yemen over the weekend, which killed 53 people and wounded 98. The Houthis responded by claiming attacks on a U.S. aircraft carrier and staging massive protests in their controlled areas, where crowds chanted anti-American and anti-Israel slogans.
Trump warned of “great force” against further Houthi aggression, accusing Iran of playing the “innocent victim.” The Iran-backed Houthis have been targeting Red Sea shipping since late 2023, citing solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. They have also launched missile and drone strikes on Israel, prompting Israeli retaliation.
With tensions rising, Trump’s declaration marks a shift toward directly confronting Iran over Houthi actions, raising fears of broader regional conflict.
