For the first time since fighting erupted with Iran, schools across Israel are beginning to reopen. The move follows the IDF Home Front Command’s announcement that all nationwide civilian restrictions have been lifted.
However, not all schools are resuming classes. Local authorities must also give the green light, and many have opted to keep schools closed due to ongoing damage. According to Channel 12, around 300 educational institutions were hit by Iranian ballistic missile attacks. Some are simply not safe to reopen yet.
The situation is particularly difficult for displaced families. Children whose homes were damaged or destroyed may now be staying far from their usual schools, adding further disruption to their education.
Israeli students have endured repeated interruptions in recent years. Since 2020, the education system has faced closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic, conflicts with Gaza-based terror groups, strikes, and most recently, the war triggered by the October 7, 2023 attacks.
While reopening schools marks a return to routine for many, it also highlights the lingering consequences of the conflict.
