At least 35 people, including four children, have been killed amid ongoing protests across Iran, according to the Human Rights Activists News Agency.

The U.S.-based group reports more than 1,200 detentions as demonstrations spread to over 250 locations in 27 provinces. Those killed include 29 protesters, two security personnel, and four children.

The unrest was sparked by Iran’s collapsing economy following tightened sanctions and the aftermath of a brief war with Israel. In December, Iran’s currency fell to a record low of 1.4 million rials to the U.S. dollar, intensifying public anger.

Iranian state-linked media reported hundreds of police and Basij militia members injured during clashes. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump warned Tehran against violent crackdowns, suggesting possible American intervention.

The protests mark Iran’s most significant unrest since 2022, when nationwide demonstrations followed the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody.
