What began as a theft investigation ended with a major drug bust in Doral over the weekend, authorities said.
Miami-Dade detectives arrested 30-year-old Kadniel Blackwood on Saturday after receiving a tip about stolen JBL speakers valued at approximately $500,000. According to jail records, Blackwood faces charges of cannabis trafficking and resisting arrest without violence.
An arrest report said the stolen speakers had been taken from a shipping container and contained a GPS tracking device hidden inside one of the boxes. The device led detectives to a warehouse in Doral.
Surveillance footage showed a large pallet with several boxes positioned outside the warehouse fence. Detectives observed Blackwood parked nearby and attempting to load the boxes into his vehicle.
When plainclothes officers approached, Blackwood fled on foot but fell between a parked car and a fence, allowing officers to take him into custody, the report said.
While questioning Blackwood, detectives noticed a strong smell of marijuana coming from the boxes. Upon opening them, officers discovered approximately 201 vacuum-sealed bags of cannabis weighing about 233 pounds.
Investigators also found a shopping bag filled with cash wrapped in rubber bands inside Blackwood’s car, along with a wallet. Authorities said the total amount of cash seized was $36,158.
Blackwood was transported to Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office headquarters, where he declined to speak with investigators.
